Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio
June 21, 4 p.m. Merrill Hall, Room 003, 1201 E. Third St., Bloomington -- This concert will feature Joseph Kalichstein, piano; Jaime Laredo, violin; and Sharon Robinson, cello. The repertoire includes works by Beethoven, Shostakovich and Schubert.

IU’s Midsummer Theatre Program trains aspiring actors

A flock of teenage girls in various message T-shirts and sneakers struggle into their petticoats as a group of teen boys looks on ("Where's mine?" jokes one boy) for a "semi-dress" rehearsal in which the girls morph into giggling, dancing Shakesperean fairies. The 19 teens are in drama camp heaven for two weeks at Indiana University Bloomington, where the 2009 Midsummer Theatre Program is entering its 11th year. This year's camp began June 7 and culminates with a free, open to the public performance Saturday (June 20) at 2 p.m. in the Wells-Metz Theatre. The performance will include a variety of scenes from both Shakespeare and popular musical theater productions.

Assistant Professor Eden Medina's background as an electrical engineer -- combined with an interest in Latin American history -- led to her research interest in Project Cybersyn, an early computer network designed to regulate Chile's economic transition to socialism during the government of Salvador Allende.

Indiana University's Office of Creative Services has been honored with the top national award from the Council for Advancement of Education (CASE) for its "Innovate Indiana" campaign. The campaign included an Innovate Indiana Web site, print brochures and ads, billboards and a postcard series featuring economic development success stories from all eight IU campuses.

In honor of summer solstice, the shortest night of the year, the Indiana University Art Museum will host a special reception tonight (Thursday, June 18) from 7 to 9 p.m. From Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream to Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night, Midsummer Night (also known as summer solstice, which technically occurs June 21 in the northern hemisphere) has inspired artists, who are attracted to its associations with ancient rituals, lovers' escapades and nature's bounty.

Soon after renovations to the IU School of Dentistry's Patient Admissions division were completed, the clinical affairs faculty and staff decided that the remodeled area could benefit from an additional element of privacy to further separate the bank of patient registration desks from the nearby reception seating. They went looking for a solution -- and found it in the creative vision of two students from IUPUI's Herron School of Art and Design.

Indiana University will honor the 11th annual Juneteenth Freedom Celebration, sponsored by IU's Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, with a one-evening gala Friday, June 26, at 5 p.m. Juneteenth recalls June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom.
