'The Light in the Piazza' to make collegiate premiere at IU with original Broadway conductor

The Indiana University Opera Theater's collegiate premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical The Light in the Piazza (by Adam Guettel) will be guest conducted by Broadway veteran Dan Riddle, the associate conductor of the original hit Broadway show. Tickets are on sale now at Bloomington's Musical Arts Center for the July 31 and Aug. 1, 7 and 8 performances.  Full Story

 IU Bloomington hosting Hispanic Youth Leadership Academy

Latino Leadership Youth Camp

Today (Thursday, July 23) is the third and final day of Indiana's third-annual Hispanic Youth Leadership Academy, which this year took place at Indiana University Bloomington. From July 21-23, 50 Latino students from nearly two dozen Northwest Indiana high schools lived on campus at IU, where they attended workshops, networked with successful Hispanic community leaders and honed their leadership skills. The academy is a program of the Hispanic Organization Promoting Excellence (HOPE), founded by Lake County Indiana Sheriff Roy Dominguez. The academy's executive director is José Arredondo, who created the Hispanic Youth Leadership Academy.

 Jacobs School of Music alumna Angela Brown receives Governor's Arts Award

Gov. Mitch Daniels and the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced July 10 that Indiana University Jacobs School of Music alumna Angela Brown is among the recipients of the 2009 Governor's Arts Awards. The five recipients will be honored during a special performance ceremony on Sept. 25 at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie.

 IU Art Museum opens doors to conservation lab for Benton murals

The Indiana University Art Museum is offering a glimpse into the world of painting conservation this summer. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from now through the end of August, the public is invited to observe the ongoing conservation of two panels from Thomas Hart Benton's famous Indiana murals at the IU Art Museum's painting conservation laboratory. The murals were originally created for the Indiana Hall at the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago in 22 panels that stretched 250 feet, encircling the exposition.

 John James Audubon subject of NEH-funded 'Picturing America' institute at IU Bloomington

High school teachers from across the country converged in Bloomington July 6 for a four-week "Picturing John James Audubon Institute" at Indiana University, the first of its kind. The institute is directed by Indiana University English Professor Christoph Irmscher (Alita Hornick from the IU Department of English helped organize the institute), and funded by a $200,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities through its Picturing America series of summer seminars and institutes for high school teachers. The institute has featured experts on Audubon, American art and natural history.

 Professional actors, IU students bring Noel Coward's 'Present Laughter' to Brown County Playhouse

"Present Laughter"

The timeless work of master comic playwright Noel Coward returns to Indiana University's Brown County Playhouse for the first time since 1967 with the comedy Present Laughter, starring IU master's students in acting and professional actors from across the country whose collective credits include a role in John Waters' final film, the European premiere of Doubt and a stint on "Law and Order." Present Laughter is directed by Jonathan Michaelsen, producer for the Brown County Playhouse. Michaelsen lauds Coward's "great style and sparkling writing."
