Field hockey's amazing Mutsa Mutbembwa
At first glance, virtually everything about field hockey star Mutsa Mutembwa can be intimidating. She is tall, muscular, profoundly accomplished for her age, speaks with the coolest accent this side of Sean Connery, and is in possession of Jeffersonian intelligence. There are just not a lot of people like Mutsa Mutembwa walking around the local shopping mall.

Indiana University dedicated the North End Zone Student-Athlete Development Center at Memorial Stadium last Friday. The ceremony, which was held in the brand new Henke Hall of Champions, was enjoyed by several hundred guests and dignitaries.

She possesses the devastating combination of an ideal physiology for her sport, breathtaking athleticism, and a competitive arrogance that comes around once in a generation for a program. She is on pace to demolish almost all of the school's significant offensive records. Her name is Ashley Benson. She plays volleyball. And with due respect for all of the other fall sport athletes, she is, without question, the best show in town.

"Hoosier Hysteria" officially gets underway for 2009-10 when Indiana University men's and women's basketball teams tip off the new season in Assembly Hall, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. IU men's basketball coach Tom Crean -- backed by the seven newcomers who provided the Hoosiers with the top recruiting class in the Big Ten and nine returnees -- is ready to go.

Indiana defensive end Jammie Kirlew earned a spot on the 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, honoring dedicated and hard-working student-athletes for their off-the-field achievements and selfless contributions to their communities. Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced the 22 student-athletes chosen for the prestigious honor on Sept. 22.
