And according to Indiana University health historian Ruth Clifford Engs, literary giant Upton Sinclair was in the thick of it.

Homecoming Lecture
IU alumni and College Football Hall of Fame members George Taliaferro and Anthony Thompson will present this Homecoming lecture on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. in the IU Bloomington Whittenberger Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Somewhere in the world, right at this moment, someone is watching the cult-classic 1998 Coen brothers film The Big Lebowski and sipping a white Russian. Just ask Ed Comentale, an associate professor of English at Indiana University Bloomington, who co-wrote and edited an upcoming book of essays analyzing the movie, titled The Year's Work in Lebowski Studies.

Indiana University Opera Theater continues its 2009-10 season with the passionate, timeless Roméo et Juliette, opening Oct. 23 at the Musical Arts Center. The company has produced this work only twice before, in 1966 and in 2005.

The Indiana Memorial Union Board, the programming and governing body of one of Indiana University's most recognizable and enduring landmarks, officially turns 100 in December. Today a 500,000-square-foot, bustling gathering place for faculty, staff, students and visitors, the IMU contains a three-star hotel, several restaurants, a multilevel bookstore, a bowling alley, a movie theater, a beauty salon, an electronics store and hundreds of gathering spaces for high-profile lecturers, meetings, conferences and performances.

Indiana University senior Brittney Paulk created "Adopt-a-Nonprofit," a community service initiative that pairs IU's 11 residence halls with 11 area nonprofit organizations. This year's theme is poverty, and some of the community organizations that will be supported by the effort include Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, Middle Way House, Salvation Army, Hoosier Hills Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity.

The Indiana University Northwest Center for Regional Excellence (CRE), in partnership with the IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art, South Shore Arts and Wesson Art Gallery of the Dubois Library, will present "Fusion of the Arts 2009," an exhibit featuring the work of 28 area artists. "Fusion of the Arts 2009" will run through Oct. 20 with a final reception and awards ceremony Friday, Oct. 23, at IU Northwest held in conjunction with the Fourth Annual Regional Arts Summit.
