Bending the rules concerning kids drinking is fraught with risk, says Ruth Gassman, director of the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.  Body's immune system response to dental plaque varies by gender and race

Will neglecting to brush your teeth damage more than just your smile? Can failing to attack dental plaque increase your risk of heart damage? The answer to both questions may be "yes" if you are a black male, according to a study by Michael Kowolik, professor of periodontics and associate dean for graduate education at the IU School of Dentistry on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

The pandemic nature of H1N1 and regular seasonal flu makes this fall and winter holiday seasons different than previous years. "It is best to be on the safe side and protect yourself and others," says Mohammad Torabi, chair of the Department of Applied Health Science in IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Torabi gives recommendations for protecting yourself and loved ones from H1N1 this holiday season.

 13th annual IU Blood Donor Challenge runs nationwide through Nov. 13

The IU Blood Donor Challenge, a nationwide event, runs through Nov. 13. "We're trying to raise 5,000 units of blood -- it's not limited only to IU-affiliated groups. We encourage community organizations, high schools, social groups -- anyone -- to organize a blood drive or donate blood at a participating agency in their area," says Jennifer Gentry, director of alumni programs with the IU Alumni Association.
