IU women's basketball preview
The Indiana University women's basketball program enters the 2009-10 campaign with one of the youngest teams in the program's history. But the Hoosiers boast one of the most dynamic scoring combinations in the Big Ten, athleticism around the perimeter, a solid supporting cast, a sprinkling of talented freshmen and a head coach who has enjoyed unprecedented success in her first three seasons in Bloomington. More than 1,800 fans -- mostly children in Halloween costumes -- invaded Assembly Hall last Saturday afternoon as Indiana University's Tom Crean and his Hoosier basketball team, continuing the process of restoring one of the premier programs in NCAA history, looked to bond with a new generation of IU fans. For Crean, Saturday's 'Haunted Hall of Hoops', the second edition of an event he introduced a year ago, was more about bonding with a new generation of Hoosier fans than worrying about how his team would play in a 25-minute scrimmage. At the press conference following the Illinois game, Head Coach Bill Lynch extolled the virtues of his quarterback Ben Chappell. "He is a smart football player who is one of the few quarterbacks I have been around who sees it. Ben can come off the field after a play or a series and tell you exactly what he saw. You can't see it on the sideline, because there are so many bodies in the way. When you turn the tape on Sunday, what he told you he saw is what happened. The Indiana Department of Athletics recently honored the 2008-09 Alpha Beta class at a reception in the Henke Hall of Champions in the North End Zone Student-Athlete Development Center. Alpha Beta honors all student-athletes who have attained at least a 3.2 grade point average in the fall 2008 and/or the spring 2009 semesters. IU honored 335 student-athletes, with 258 earned Alpha Beta honors in the fall semester, and 241 earning the honor in the spring semester. Of the fall semester honorees, 154 student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and 134 accomplished that feat during the spring semester.
