Hoosier baseball signs nine
Head Coach Tracy Smith and the Indiana baseball staff have signed nine players to continue their baseball careers at Indiana University beginning in the 2010-11 season. "Once again, we were able to pull kids from all over the country to come to IU," Smith said. "The exposure from the Big Ten Network is huge for us. The Indiana men's soccer team was awarded an at-large berth into the 2009 NCAA Tournament and will face the Louisville Cardinals in the first round on Thursday (Nov. 19) at 7 p.m. on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington. Thanks in large part to a dramatic increase in student attendance, Indiana University football will average more than 40,000 fans per game, including over 10,000 students for the first time in 17 years, IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass announced Tuesday (Nov. 18). IU has averaged 40,478 fans per game through its first five home contests, and ticket sales for the home finale against Purdue already exceed 40,000, thus ensuring the plus 40,000 milestone. The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced last Sunday (Nov. 15) the team and individual qualifiers for the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships. The Indiana women's team received one of 13 at-large bids into the national meet after finishing fourth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Bloomington on Saturday (Nov. 14). There also were stories about IU basketball -- a women's team preview and a men's Halloween feature -- and academic honors for soccer's senior defender Ofori Sarkodi and all IU athletes who earned at least a 3.2 grade point average in the 2009 fall and/or spring semesters.
