Cirque Dreams will light up Bloomington at IU Auditorium
Big top meets Broadway when Cirque Dreams: Illumination creates a magical, neon city at Indiana University Auditorium, 1211 E. Seventh St. on Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. on the IU Bloomington campus. Cirque Dreams: Illumination mixes the European cirque style with American Broadway musical theater, transforming a seemingly ordinary city and its residents into a unique fantasy world. Cirque Dreams is the first company to produce this type of production on Broadway. Tickets are on sale now.

Food journals, ranging from low-tech notebooks to Web programs and smartphone apps, keep track of such things as types and quantities of foods eaten, nutritional analyses and calories burned through physical activity. Athletes' superstitions and rituals can help them get psyched up for contests, but when these rituals involve non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs -- which many athletes gobble down before and during events -- they could be causing more harm than good. "You need to think of pain as not a hindrance, but as a signal that something is not quite right," says Stuart Warden, whose research at IUPUI focuses on musculoskeletal health and sports medicine.

As high school athletes push their bodies this winter sports season, they become more vulnerable to viruses and other bugs going around school or home. Their immune systems need some TLC -- good nutrition, hydration and vaccinations for both the seasonal and H1N1 flu, says Douglas McKeag, M.D., director of the IU Center for Sports Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Involving family members of pediatric cancer and hematology patients in medical rounds benefits both the family and the medical team, according to an IU School of Medicine study. Riley Hospital for Children, where the study was conducted, is one of only a small number of hospitals nationwide routinely offering these parents the opportunity to join their child's medical team as active participants in the discussion and planning of their son's or daughter's care.

Researchers discuss a study examining the body's immune system response to dental plaque and how it varies by gender and race. Active for Life also offers expert tips to help prevent eye injuries at home and information about the 13th annual IU Blood Donor Challenge.
