Photographers provide a glimpse of India
The upcoming exhibit at Indiana University East will feature a glimpse of India from four different photographers. "Glimpses of Unfamiliar India" will be on display Jan. 25 to March 12 in The Gallery and Meijer Artway. The free exhibit features the photography of Satya Banga, Jon Hughes, Sean Hughes, and Philip Oechsli. Banga, a native of Mumbai, India, is a self-taught fine art photographer. A free reception will be held for the artists at 7 p.m. on Jan. 27.

IU’s Lilly Library to celebrate 50th anniversary with collection of rare treasures

An exhibition of rare books and manuscripts to mark the 50th anniversary of Indiana University's Lilly Library will include treasures never before displayed together. An open house to view the exhibition and the library's newly renovated reading room is scheduled for Jan. 22 from 5 -9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and the exhibition runs through May 8.

Throughout the month, Indiana University Bloomington has celebrated the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with activities that will culminate Jan. 23 (Saturday). The university also helped present the community's celebration, featuring the Rev. Jesse Jackson, on Jan. 18, 2010, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

IU-Purdue University Indianapolis alumnus Matthew Markoff -- better known on hip-hop billboards as rapper M-Eighty -- recently raised more than $10,000 to build a new educational facility for underprivileged students in Bodo, Nigeria. After nine hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds of rhyming over bass-heavy beats, the Indianapolis native also successfully broke the Guinness World Record for longest freestyle rap.

Most students enter Damien Fleming's "Middle English Literature" class expecting to read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, not hone their acting skills. Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) students Fleming's class got to do both this past semester, along with gaining a greater understanding of medieval literature.

Indiana University Bloomington's Mathers Museum of World Cultures hosted a guided lunchtime tour of the museum for members of the university's professional staff. Visitors saw the handmade chairs shown in "A World of His Own: The Uncommon Artistry of Chester Cornett," and "Images of Native Americans: The Wanamaker Collection" in celebration of November's Native American Heritage Month, and got a behind-the-scenes look at stored items in an area of the museum usually closed to the public.

In the Jan. 7, 2010, issue of Live at IU, we featured stories on a new residency program by The Cleveland Orchestra at the Jacobs School of Music; a four-month film series and symposium in honor of the East German Cinema of the DEFA Studios; the "green" themed ArtsWeek 2010; the first Indiana Guitar Festival and Competition, which will be hosted by IU Bloomington's Jacobs School of Music; an international award for WFIU's Muslim Voices project; IUPUI's new editorial project that will result in The New Oxford Shakespeare; and a spring concert by Straight No Chaser.
