Sylvia McNair comes home

She's been at home on the grand stages of Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall and in more intimate settings such as the Rainbow Room and Algonquin's legendary Oak Room. But Sylvia McNair has always held a special place in her heart for Indiana University. In what amounts to a homecoming of sorts, the IU alumna, two-time Grammy Award-winner and internationally renowned soprano is returning to Bloomington to join the voice faculty at the IU Jacobs School of Music. She will begin teaching this fall.

School of Fine Arts Professor Nicole Jacquard was living in Melbourne, Australia, two years ago, studying for her doctorate in fine arts, when she learned about the rapid prototyping equipment being used at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility. An IU alumna who studies how computers can be adapted into the studio arts, Jacquard was intrigued by the technological advances being made at the IUCF, one of Indiana's largest scientific facilities and a recognized leader in the research and advancement of nuclear physics.

World-famous sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, the namesake for IU's Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, passed away 50 years ago. In honor of this man who forever changed the way America talks about sex, the Ryder film series will present a special showing of the film Kinsey at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington, Ind.

To laugh or not to laugh? This is definitely NOT the question when it comes to The Reduced Shakespeare Company's play The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged), which marks the third production of the 58th season of professional summer theatre at the Brown County Playhouse in Nashville, Ind. This off-the-wall, interactive comedy includes three students from the IU Department of Theatre and Drama and is being directed by Professor Dale McFadden.

Baker, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra provides the 2006 IU Summer Music Festival finale in a performance on Saturday (Aug. 12) devoted to the legendary music greats Quincy Jones and Oliver Nelson. As the orchestra-in-residence at the National Museum of American History, the SJMO continues a vibrant tradition of historically authentic jazz performances. Learn more about the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and its mission to explore, present, promote and perpetuate the historical legacy of jazz.

Survey shows a shift in drug use among Indiana adolescents

Results from the 16th Annual Survey of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use by Indiana Children and Adolescents, conducted by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University Bloomington, suggest that shifts are taking place in the types of drugs used by some youth and the manner in which these drugs are used, with increases seen in smokeless tobacco and injection drugs. The survey results offer insight into the consequences of drug use for adolescents, links between drug use and school performance, and the preventive potential of after-school activities.

It's football season. The 2006 IU Football Kickoff Luncheon and the IU Football Pep Rally will be held on Thursday, Aug. 24, and will be hosted by Emmis Communications in Indianapolis. The pep rally will begin at 11 a.m. at Monument Circle. The luncheon kicks off at noon at the Omni Severin Hotel. Hoosier Head Coach Terry Hoeppner and Athletics Director Rick Greenspan will speak at the luncheon to preview the upcoming season. Indiana play-by-play announcer Don Fischer will serve as master of ceremonies.
