NSF awards IU $3.82 million for Open Science Grid Operations Center
|
The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy have renewed funding for the Open Science Grid project, providing $27 million from 2012 to 2016. Indiana University will receive $3.82 million of the award to continue running OSG's Operations Center, highlighting IU's noted expertise in grid computing and ability to deliver a reliable, secure, easy-to-use environment.

Navy's Crane lab, IU enter collaborative research agreement to enhance private-sector opportunities

Indiana University has entered into a collaborative research and development agreement with the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, that will allow IU campuses to work more closely with Crane and with private-sector partners to transfer technology to the private sector.

Informatics team lands $1.85 million from Intel to study IT as social, cultural phenomena
|
A research group at Indiana University Bloomington's School of Informatics and Computing has received over $1.85 million to create the Intel Science and Technology Center for Social Computing. The award was announced by Intel Labs as part of a $12 million research center composed of faculty from IU and four other universities.

Shakespeare? There's an app for that, with help from IU English professor
|
Indiana University associate English professor Ellen MacKay's work is making it possible to interact with Shakespeare in a whole new way. She's part of an academic collaboration creating iPad applications for some of the Bard's most well-known plays, produced by South Bend-based Luminary Digital Media and featuring scholarly content from academics at universities such as Notre Dame, Yale and Harvard.

IU role in Human Microbiome Project exposes battle history between bacteria, viruses in human body
|
An Indiana University team of researchers has conducted the most in-depth and diverse genetic analysis of the defense systems that trillions of micro-organisms in the human body use to fend off viruses. The work is among a collection of 16 research papers released by the Human Microbiome Project Consortium, a National Institutes of Health-led effort to map the normal microbial make-up of healthy humans.

In the June 2012 edition of IT Matters @ IU, The Sakai Foundation selected its group of 2012 Sakai Fellows, which included three recipients with direct ties to Indiana University: IU's Chris Maurer and Lynn Ward received the honor, along with former employee Lance Speelmon. Also, Indiana University's 2012 Electronic Waste Collection Days event netted 385,000 pounds of computer and electronic equipment for recycling; IU and Pearson announced they would work together to reduce the costs of digital textbooks for students on all IU campuses, including through IU's eTexts initiative, which enables faculty to optionally choose digital textbooks and online exercises at reduced prices for students; and online file sharing and storage got easier and more secure at IU since it began working with cloud content management service Box to provide students, faculty and staff with a secure, Web-based file storage and collaboration platform.

XSEDE12, the inaugural conference of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment project, which is supported by the National Science Foundation, will run July 16 to 20 at the InterContinental hotel, 505 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago. The conference promises valuable networking opportunities and conference sessions including tutorials, papers, posters, panels, Birds of a Feather, a Visualization Showcase and reception, closing speaker and awards luncheon, a pre-conference reception for students and social event options.
