IU's Jamie Barton named MET Opera winner

Jamie Barton Indiana University Jacobs School of Music master's student Jamie Barton was named a grand prize winner at the annual Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions on Sunday (April 1), making her the eighth winner from the IU Jacobs School of Music in the past 10 years. The award, a coveted recognition of up-and-coming opera stars and a way for the Metropolitan Opera to discover new talent. Mary Ann Hart, professor of music and chair of the Department of Voice at the IU Jacobs School of Music, is not surprised at her student Jamie Barton's success. "You just cannot mistake Jamie's voice for any other singer," Hart says. "Everyone has a unique sound, but Jamie's timbre seems to extend a mile in every direction; dark and bright, soft and loud, serene and vivacious."  Full Story

 David Baker receives jazz living legend award at Kennedy Center

An Indiana University professor from the Jacobs School of Music was recently recognized as a living legend among jazz artists. IU Jacobs School of Music's Distinguished Professor David N. Baker was among those included in the roster of musicians who received their "Living Jazz Legend Award" for lifetime achievement. The award is one of many accolades Baker has received in his extraordinary career.

 Up Close and Personal with Mme. Butterfly

IU Jacobs School of Music closes its 2006-07 Opera & Ballet Theatre season with Giacomo Puccini's exotic and deeply moving Madama Butterfly. Performing the lead role of Cio-cio-san (Madame Butterfly) is Jing Zhang, a lyric soprano and second-year masters student of vocal performance. During the opera's hectic final week of rehearsals, she alighted and graciously answered a few questions for Live at IU.

 A puzzling gift

Jerry Slocum's gift to Indiana University's Lilly Library will frustrate you. The lifelong collector has donated 30,000 mechanical puzzles and 4,000 puzzle-related books to Indiana University's Lilly Library. Jerry began collecting puzzles after he received a gift from his father -- a Chinese puzzle called the "Ring of Seven." "It was such a thrill," he says. "And neither my friends, nor my sister, nor my father could solve it. That was a thrill, too."

 Cracking the Domenico code

A museum director's detective work is restoring a visionary 18th-century Venetian artist to his rightful place in the history of art. Heidi Gealt, director of the IU Art Museum in Bloomington, and George Knox, an emeritus professor at the University of Vancouver, have reconstructed the largest known New Testament cycle produced by a single artist: 313 large, finished drawings in ink and wash by Domenico Tiepolo, one of the foremost Venetian artists active during the second half of the 18th century. Nearly 60 of the finest drawings are on display at the Frick Collection in New York City. A smaller version of the show will be at the IU Art Museum through May 20.

 Celebrate Nation Poetry Month with events at IU

T.S. Eliot called April "the cruelest month." Possibly to offset the bad rap the month has had since "The Waste Land" was penned, the Academy of American Poets declared April National Poetry Month in 1996. Now the largest literary celebration in the world, National Poetry Month continues to increase the visibility, presence and accessibility of poetry in American culture. IU Bloomington celebrates poetry this month with multiple events occurring in conjunction with a month-long festival.
