IU Ballet Theater opens season Oct. 5–6 with fall ballet “Perspectives 1900s”

Indiana University Ballet Theater begins its exciting new season Oct. 5 and 6 with the fall ballet "Perspectives 1900s," a varied selection of vignettes, all rooted in one of the most inventive artistic periods in the history of dance. "The turn of the century was a particularly fertile time for the art of ballet," said Michael Vernon, chair of the IU Jacobs School of Music's Ballet Department. "It was a time when, instead of ballet following fashion, ballet actually influenced fashion."

There are no shortcuts for students in IU's Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design. Unlike studying for a test or even writing a paper, rushing or cramming projects simply isn't an option here. To complete assignments, students must devote hours to meticulous construction, over and above the time spent learning about the trades. But for IU seniors James DiMartino and Cheri' McDowell, the hard work is about to pay off. Throughout the semester, Live at IU will follow these students as they fine-tune their visions and prepare for life as professional designers.

For four decades, Marjorie Schick has influenced the worlds of craft and jewelry in both the U.S. and abroad. Her ability to create forms that are both jewelry and sculpture places her in the first wave of crossover artists who combined the conceptual programs of the fine arts with methods and values associated with craft. Schick's work -- which includes 67 works of art -- will be on display at the IU Art Museum beginning Oct. 6.

This fall, a series of book signings across Indiana will honor Indiana University graduate and All-American football star George Taliaferro. Taliaferro was a star quarterback on IU's first great football team in 1945, two years before Jackie Robinson broke baseball's racial barrier.

The vivid imagination of Dr. Seuss is alive on stage as the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center opens its 2007-08 season with Seussical the Musical directed by Emmy winner George Pinney. Writers Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty celebrate the wit and wisdom of Seuss' books in an engaging musical for audiences of all ages.
