Deborah Boardman Exhibition
Now through Nov. 18, IU Kokomo Art Gallery, Indiana University Kokomo -- Artist Deborah Boardman will exhibit her work, which is inspired by natural lines of energy and the history of the Miami Nation of Indiana. Boardman will show her lush, large-scale paintings, a cast glass sculpture, other representations, and artifacts that allude to loss of the land, the desecration of burial grounds and the changing of waterways to accommodate agriculture.

Concertmastery revealed

At age 36, violinist Alexander Kerr assumed the endowed Linda and Jack Gill Chair in Music as professor of violin at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, becoming the string department's youngest violin professor. Kerr added to his accolades this fall when he filled the newly-created position of Principal Guest Concertmaster with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO). Kerr, who previously performed as guest concertmaster with the ISO, will share duties with Concertmaster Zach De Pue and will appear about six times during the 2007-2008 season. In this Q&A, Kerr explains the role of a concertmaster in an orchestra and the challenges associated with the duty.

Earlier this semester, Live at IU introduced readers to James DiMartino and Cheri' McDowell, seniors in the department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design whose careers are about to take off. Slinging Doughnuts for the Boys: An American Woman in World War II, tells about the war from the point of view of Liz Richardson, a college-educated woman from Mishawaka, Ind., who worked on a Red Cross Clubmobile in England and France. Indiana University Press has published the book by IU history professor Jim Madison.

Grammy award winning violinist Hilary Hahn takes to the Indiana University Auditorium stage for an evening of classical virtuosity Saturday, Nov. 3. Named by Time magazine as America's best young classical musician in 2001, Hahn's maturity, impeccable phrasing and immaculate technique have garnered her a Grammy Award and have earned her a place with the world's most acclaimed orchestras.

Indiana University's Lilly Library has acquired an extremely rare copy of a book detailing the origins of the well known Bavarian tradition of Oktoberfest. One of only a few copies worldwide, the book was published in 1811 and describes the harvest festival first held to celebrate the 1810 wedding of the crown prince Ludwig to princess Theresa von Sachsen-Hildurghausen.

Graffiti may seem more anarchy than art, but a new community art project involving Indiana University and the cities surrounding its various campuses around the state will showcase graffiti as a powerful political art form. The project is part of IU's Moveable Feast of the Arts Program.
