When the New York Youth Symphony opens its 45th anniversary season at Carnegie Hall on Dec. 9 at 2 p.m., it will unintentionally host a Hoosier theme. Three of the major contributors to the performance -- the conductor, Ryan McAdams; solo violinist, William Harvey; and composer, Clint Needham -- are Indiana University graduates making their Carnegie Hall debuts.

Harvey Phillips, tuba virtuoso and distinguished professor emeritus at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, has added another honor to one of the most remarkable careers in modern American musical history. He has become the first brass player chosen for induction into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.

Live at IU has followed seniors James DiMartino and Cheri' McDowell this semester as they complete their final projects in the department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design. DiMartino is a student in the department's Fashion Design Culture Group, and McDowell studies interior design within the Design Studies Group. In this segment, we see what they have prepared to kick-start their design careers.

Indiana University Bloomington professor George Hutchinson's latest book, In Search of Nella Larsen: A Biography of the Color Line, has been selected for the 2007 Christian Gauss Award of Phi Beta Kappa. Hutchinson will receive the award Dec. 7 at the Latham Hotel Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The $10,000 annual award from the Phi Beta Kappa Society is given for works of literary scholarship and criticism.

A sketch artist for Walt Disney, Bill Peet's engaging illustrations of treasured children's characters like "Droofus the Dragon," "Pamela the Camel" and "Cowardly Clyde," will be on display through Jan. 6 at the IU Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. The collection will show Peet's creative journey from when he started working to how he progressed as he went to work at Walt Disney.
