What: Evidence-Based Practice Learning Institute: Improving Practice, Outcomes, and Accountability in Community Corrections

When: Monday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Indiana Memorial Union, Indiana University Bloomington

Who: The conference is free and open to the public. It is presented by The Center for Evidence-Based Practice, which is a joint project of the Indiana Department of Correction and the Center for Adolescent and Family Studies at the Indiana University School of Education.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Community corrections in the state of Indiana is at a critical point as it struggles with the tension between the increasing need for accountability and limited resources. The Evidence-Based Research Institute serves as a venue for the professionals within Indiana Department of Correction and leaders in the state of Indiana to come together with a common aim of promoting the best practices within community corrections.

By providing opportunities to learn about the most current trends in evidence based practices, current research in the primary areas of community corrections, and to review the outcomes of the ongoing collaboration between IDOC and the Center for Evidence-Based Practices (CEBP), this conference will help prepare professionals to improve practices, outcomes, and accountability in community corrections.

CEBP is a clearinghouse that offers user-friendly information about national standards and state of the art programs in community corrections. It is designed to assist community corrections officials in Indiana with selecting, implementing and evaluation research-based interventions.

The schedule of events and media opportunities include:

  • 9-9:30 a.m: Welcome by Gerardo Gonzalez, dean of the IU School of Education; remarks from Randy Koester, deputy commissioner of the IDOC; and Mike Lloyd, director of Transitional Facilities and Community Based Programs, IDOC
  • 9:30-10:30 a.m.: Presentation by Thomas E. Feucht, executive senior science advisor at the National Institute of Justice: "Linking Research Evidence to Community Corrections Practice and Policy"
  • 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Presentation by Tom Sexton, director of the Center for Adolescent and Family Studies: "Evidence-based Practices in Community Corrections: The Indiana EBP Research Institute and Technical Assistance Center"
  • 4-5 p.m.: Town hall meeting
