A classical music icon, Yo-Yo Ma has produced more than 75 albums and has 16 Grammy Awards to his credit. In January, he received a Best Classical Crossover Performance Grammy for Yo-Yo Ma & Friends: Songs of Joy and Peace.

He currently performs with The Silk Road Ensemble, a group of internationally renowned performers and composers from more than 20 countries. Now in its 10th year, The Silk Road Ensemble's goal is to promote the study of cultural and artistic traditions and illuminate the heritage of all the countries along the ancient Silk Road trail.

Yo-Yo Ma performed at the 2002 Winter Olympics and was named Peace Ambassador by the United Nations in 2006. In addition to his 75 albums, he has appeared on a variety of movie soundtracks, including Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha. He is committed to educational programming and has worked on television shows such as "Arthur," "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" and "Sesame Street."

At his IU Auditorium performance, Yo-Yo Ma will appear with pianist Kathryn Stott.

Stott is heavily influenced by tango and Latin music and has performed with major orchestras in Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Hong Kong and Australia, among many others. She collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and leading South American musicians on the Grammy-Award winning CD Soul of the Tango.

"We are honored to welcome Yo-Yo Ma, one of the most preeminent musicians of today, to our campus and community," said Doug Booher, director of IU Auditorium. "And, in keeping with his tradition of demonstrating his incredible musical range and repertoire, the pieces he and Ms. Stott will be performing will surely provide the audience with once-in-a-lifetime memories."

The program will feature a variety of artists and genres, including Franz Schubert's Sonata in A Minor for Arpeggione and Piano, D. 821; Dimitri Shostakovich's Sonata in D Minor, Op. 40; Astor Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango; Gismonti and Carneiro's Bodas de Prata; and Quatro Canto and Cesar Franck's Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano.

Aida Huseynova will give a free, open-to-the-public pre-performance talk at 7 p.m. in Fine Arts 015. Huseynova is an adjunct faculty member in the Jacobs School of Music and served as an interpreter and research advisor for The Silk Road Ensemble.
