IU Office for Women's Affairs to address work-life policies through conference, workshop Nov. 11

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington's Office for Women's Affairs (OWA) will host its annual conference, this year titled "Empowering Women in the Workplace," Friday, Nov. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Indiana Memorial Union's Frangipani Room. (This conference is sold out.)

Also Nov. 11, a separate workshop, "Constructing Our Future: Exploring the Values, Strategic Processes and Change Mechanisms of Work-Life Policies," will be presented by OWA, the Inter-Campus Coalition for the Advancement of Women and the Office of the IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President. Spaces are still available for the workshop, which will take place in the Federal Room of the Indiana Memorial Union from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m

Empowering Women in the Workplace conference

The keynote speaker for this year's conference is Caroline Dowd-Higgins, author of the book This is Not the Career I Ordered and director of career and professional development at the IU Maurer School of Law. The conference is co-sponsored by IU's Human Resource Services office and will focus on career transitions, wellness, framing professional credentials and legal and financial planning.

Constructing Our Future workshop

This workshop aims to facilitate a better understanding of how IU can devise effective, fiscally responsible work-life policies and programming appropriate to various IU campuses that is also useful for the recruitment and retention of the best students, faculty and staff.

Keynote panelists for the workshop are Joan Girgus (Princeton University) and Ellen Ernst Kossek (Michigan State University) as well as other work/life experts from Cornell University, Iowa State University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and Purdue University. The opening keynote panel is titled "Ethical and Business Cases for Work-Life Policy and Programming."

Office for Women's Affairs

The IU Office for Women's Affairs (OWA) is a campuswide unit that exists to empower women both on and off campus in the Bloomington community. OWA educates through workshops and seminars and advocates for equitable and progressive policies while partnering with other entities to facilitate gender equity, personal safety, academic success, satisfying work environments, ethical leadership and tenure, as well as promotion and career advancement for faculty, staff and students. Yvette M. Alex-Assensoh, a licensed attorney and IU political science professor, serves as the dean of this office.
