Top college volleyball coach recognized by Indiana University

Peggy Martin receives alumni achievement award from School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 14, 2007

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Peggy Martin, former three-sport student athlete at Indiana University and current head volleyball coach at Central Missouri State University, has been named the 2007 recipient of the National Girls and Women in Sport (NGWS) Alumni Achievement Award, awarded by IU Bloomington's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Martin marked 1,000 career victories last year, making her the all-time winningest active volleyball coach at the NCAA Division II level.

A 1972 graduate of HPER, Martin captained the IU women's basketball team to berths in three consecutive Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) tournaments -- the precursor to NCAA competition for women -- in addition to earning four letters in softball and three in field hockey. She earned a doctorate in physical education from HPER in 1980.

Martin will be honored during halftime of the IU women's basketball game against Illinois on Sunday (Feb. 18). Pregame NGWS activities include interactive stations focusing on women's health, fitness, safety issues, academic successes and career opportunities. Those in attendance can visit booths hosted by IU athletics teams, club teams, youth service organizations and IU academic departments.

Doors will open at noon with the Hoosiers tipping off against Illinois at 2:05 p.m. Pre-game festivities are free of charge. Admission to the game is $5 for adults, $3 for youth, and groups of 25 or more are $2 per person.

Past winners of the NGWS HPER Alumni Achievement Award are Mildred Ball, former assistant commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, and Buffy Filippell, founder of TeamWork Consulting, an executive search firm for the sports and event management industry and TeamWork Online, the first online employment recruiting tool for sports teams and leagues.
