Acclaimed scholar of Middle East to lecture at IU

Professor Bernard Lewis, one of the world's foremost authorities on the Middle East, will speak at Indiana University on Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. His lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be in Morrison Hall, Room 007, on the Bloomington campus. A reception will follow in the Hoagy Carmichael Room.

Lewis, the Cleveland E. Dodge Professor of Near Eastern Studies Emeritus at Princeton University, is the Simona and Hart Hasten Visiting Fellow in Jewish Studies this fall at IU. He is the author of more than two dozen books, including What Went Wrong: Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response, which attracted special attention when it appeared soon after Sept. 11, 2001. An international best-seller, the book, which Lewis completed just before the attacks on New York and Washington, offers an incisive look at the historical relationship between the Middle East and Europe.

Lewis' other books include: The Political Language of Islam, The Muslim Discovery of Europe, The Middle East: A Brief History of the Last 2,000 Years, The Jews of Islam, and Semites and Anti-Semites. Several of his writings are considered essential reading for those seeking to understand the Middle East and its people.

Since the tragedy of Sept. 11, Lewis, a native of London, has been a highly sought-after authority on Islam and the Middle East. Now in his mid-80s, he has appeared on numerous television news programs and in several high profile magazines. Last November, Lewis contributed a lengthy story for The New Yorker in which he discussed the roots of the current conflict between Islamic extremists and the West. Lewis also will lecture in Indianapolis on Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Indianapolis Jewish Community Center.
