State lawmakers discuss outcome of 2008 General Assembly session in final event of CEEP Policy Chat Series

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MARCH 17, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A panel of four state lawmakers will discuss the outcome of the recently concluded 2008 session of the Indiana General Assembly as the final event of the CEEP Policy Chat Series at Indiana University for the spring. The event will take place Wednesday (March 19) at 10:30 a.m. in the State Room East of the Indiana Memorial Union on the Bloomington campus. It is free and open to the public.

The panel, split evenly with a Democrat and a Republican from both the House and Senate, will primarily discuss property tax reform and P-16 education issues. The panelists for the discussion are Rep. Greg Porter, D-Indianapolis, the chair of the Indiana House Education Committee; Sen. Vi Simpson, D-Ellettsville, a member of the State Budget Committee for nine years and now on six legislative committees; Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, chair of the Corrections, Criminal and Civil Matters Committee; and Rep. Randy Borror, R-Fort Wayne, who serves on the Ways and Means Committee.

Issues likely to be discussed by the panel include school funding, particularly related to property taxes, the state graduation rate formula, standardized testing, and teacher preparation and compensation. Audience members can participate in a question and answer session during the program.
