BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Giovanni Gallo and Jessica Wild from Carmel, Ind., have been named Kelley Scholars at Indiana University Bloomington. Both are graduates of Carmel High School.

The Kelley Scholarship honors the best undergraduate students entering IU to study business. Kelley Scholars receive tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses, and other funding, which may include funding for internships and overseas study. The award is for four years and has an annual value of more than $15,000.

The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU in the fall of 1997. The university named its School of Business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the extent of the gift.

Kelley Scholars were selected from a group of 170 students who had been accepted to IU and who were invited to apply for the Kelley program because of their outstanding records. Applications included references, high school transcripts and several personal statements on a variety of topics, including an essay.

Twenty-six finalists were invited to the IU Bloomington campus Feb. 15-16. The weekend included extensive interviews with faculty members and current Kelley Scholars, submission by each candidate of a writing sample, campus tours and a dinner. The winners were selected on the basis of their performance that weekend.

While in high school, Gallo was a four-year varsity wrestler and placed third in the state wrestling finals. He was the founder and president of the Italian-American Club, a member of the National Honor Society and a Hoosier Boys State delegate and state office holder. He received first place and was a national qualifier in the DECA Marketing Competition in Marketing Management.

Wild was a National Merit Finalist and scholarship recipient, the captain of the girls' lacrosse team, a member of the show choir and the State Treasurer of DECA.

Both will begin their education at IU this fall.
