Fourth annual IU Bloomington SPEA Auction and Gala this Friday

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 1, 2009

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs graduate students and local contributors will host the fourth annual SPEA Auction and Gala on Friday, April 3. The auction will raise funds to support internships and research pursuits that students may otherwise find unattainable because of financial constraints.

The resources raised give students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills they have obtained at SPEA to advance research, strengthen their communities and gain experiential knowledge to share in their classrooms and activities.

In the recent past, the event has supported: a summer internship with the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia in the Kyrgyz Republic; water conservation and sustainability research on the IU campus; participation in the U.S. Green Building Council's Greenbuild annual conference; participation in a professional conference on electronics recycling; and a presentation about mountain-top coal mining at a national conference.

The 2009 Auction and Gala will take place at the Indiana Memorial Union Alumni Hall. The cocktail attire event will include a silent and live auction, offering items from numerous community vendors and organizations. Contributors include the Homewood Suites Hotel, Funny Bone Comedy Club, local musicians, Inner Chef, the Lotus Festival and several other Bloomington businesses and organizations. The event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. Learn more at https://www.indiana.edu/~auction/about.htm.

Entertainment will feature Joshua Cocks, an IU student and local comedian, and the SPEA string ensemble.

Several community leaders are expected to attend, including John Graham, dean of SPEA; Deputy Mayor Maria Heslin; Jeff Baldwin, executive director of Boys and Girls Club; Jeff Baldwin; Barry Lessow, executive director of United Way of Monroe County; Eugene Tempel, CEO of the IU Foundation; and Mark Stoops, Monroe County commissioner.

The United Way of Monroe County, Intrepid Travel, IUSAID and the SPEA Graduate Program office are helping to sponsor this event. Tickets are on sale at SPEA from March 25 to April 2 and are available at the door.

The School of Public and Environmental Affairs Graduate program is ranked No. 1 Environmental Policy and Management Program and the No. 1 Non-Profit Management Program. As of 2008, the U.S. News & World Report annual survey of "America's Best Graduate Schools" ranked SPEA Master's in Public Affairs program second, tied with the Harvard Kennedy School.
