Beginning June 15, IU Army ROTC will conduct its operations at the Smith Research Center, an IU School of Education center located at 2805 E 10th St. The three cadre members who are leaving include Maj. Jason Brady, Sgt. 1st Class Roy Hughes and Maj. (Retired) Todd Tinius.

"These three cadre members will be dearly missed, as they have been the heart and soul of the program, all of whom have made significant contributions in making this the No.1 Senior Army ROTC program in the nation for 2007," said Lt. Col. Eric Arnold, professor of military science at Indiana University.

The cadre members' work will change to the following:

  • Brady, an Indiana Army National Guard officer and former IU Army ROTC executive officer, is preparing to deploy to Iraq. He is a 1996 IU alumnus who spent four years assigned to IU Army ROTC.
  • Hughes, IU Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) coordinator and freshman cadet instructor for more than two years, will now serve as the Indiana State SMP coordinator.
  • Tinius, a 1991 Indiana State University alumnus (bachelor's degree) and 2000 IU Bloomington alumnus (master's degree), is a former scholarship and enrollment officer. He has accepted a Department of the Army civilian position at Fort McCoy Wis., after serving at IU for the last five years.

In addition to changes in the cadre, the IU Army ROTC is moving from its current location at 814 E. Third St., where it has been headquartered since 1991. The move is neccesary to accomodate a significant increase in cadets and cadre over the past five years. The Smith Research Center will afford the required operational space to accommodate this growth. Prior to its Third Street home, IU Army ROTC was housed in Rawles Hall. IU Air Force ROTC is not moving and will remain in its current location.

For some cadre, saying goodbye to 814 E. Third St. is a sad affair. Tonya Pettay, IU employee and IU Army ROTC cadre member for more than 11 years, says the current location has been like another home for her. Pettay has built many good memories supporting the cadets at the Third Street location.

Recently, Pettay reminisced about the annual IU Homecoming parades in front of the building, the welcome back picnics and the various social events centered around the Third Street structure. Pettay stays in touch with most of the former grads and has provided continuity for the program.
