The lecture series, which is free and open to the public, will begin on Friday (Sept. 11) with a presentation by Christophe Jaffrelot, the Alliance visiting professor at Columbia University and a leading India scholar in France and adviser to the French government.

Jaffrelot will speak on the topic "India's 2009 elections: The Resilience of Regionalism and Ethnicity" at 5:30 p.m. at the India Studies House (825 E. Eighth St.).

According to Jaffrelot, the recent set of Indian national elections do not mark a return to single-party dominance there. He will discuss how election results suggest a fragmentation of the Indian political scene is still a powerful force and that the re-nationalization of Indian politics is far from being back on track.
