IU School of Optometry celebrates 50 years of service to citizens of Indiana

A "Wall of Recognition" was unveiled in the Indiana University School of Optometry as part of a recent ceremony celebrating the school's 50th anniversary. Individuals who were essential to the founding and development of the school were honored, and their portraits and a statement of their contributions will be perpetually on display.

"A 50-year commitment to excellence in vision care, education, research and service has resulted in the IU School of Optometry becoming one of the leading vision centers in the world," said School of Optometry Dean Gerald Lowther. "The faculty perform research in many areas of vision and eye care including adaptive optics, retinal function, glaucoma, macular degeneration, aging, infant vision, refractive error, dry eye, contact lenses, visual perception and ocular physiology."

The school provides a full range of eye care services to the citizens of Indiana through three main clinics: the Atwater Eye Care Center on the Bloomington campus, the Community Eye Care Center on the west side of Bloomington, and the Indianapolis Eye Care Center near the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis.

The school also has many outreach programs providing eye care to individuals in need in the Bloomington, Indianapolis and southern Indiana regions.

"The school has an extensive international involvement as well," Lowther said. "The mission of the Indiana University School of Optometry is to protect, advance and promote the vision, eye care and health of people worldwide."
