IU students, Indiana Memorial Union going for world record with nationwide can drive

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nov. 9, 2009

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University will join college campuses throughout the country on Thursday, Nov. 12, in a friendly competition to break the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of food gathered for the hungry in 24 hours.

Helping Hands Across America

Helping Hands Across America (formerly titled Cans Across America) yielded more than 380,000 pounds of food last year from college campuses across the nation. This year's goal exceeds 396,000 pounds. Last year, IU Bloomington collected more than 5,000 pounds of food in the competition.

IU's can drive is organized by Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) Dining Services in conjunction with the Sodexo Foundation and the STOP Hunger initiative. All donations will benefit Bloomington area residents through the Hoosier Hills Food Bank (https://www.hhfoodbank.org/).

Donations can be made in the form of cash or any nonperishable food items at any IMU dining unit, at IU libraries and the Wright Quad Center from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 12. The event is open to IU students, faculty, staff and the general public.

Participants can make cash donations of $1, $5 or $10, pre-bagged food or canned food donations. When a customer purchases a bag, the items are transferred to the Donated Food Holding Area. On Nov. 12, all donated items will be moved to the official collection site. Included products are Dole Juice, Quaker Instant Oatmeal Express, SunChips, Quaker Chewy Granola Bars, Campbell's Canned Soup, Tuna Fish and Dole Fruit Cups.

Cans may be purchased at any IMU dining unit (two cans for $1) from 3 p.m., Nov. 11, until 3 p.m., Nov. 12. The "weigh-in" at the IMU will take place Nov. 12 at 3:30 p.m.

Last year's winner was Curry College in Milton, Mass., which collected nearly 50,000 lbs. of food.
