Third annual More Art, Less Trash competition to brighten outdoor recycling

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 26, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University student group Volunteers in Sustainability (ViS) will sponsor the third annual "More Art, Less Trash" competition, an outdoor recycling bin design contest for the Bloomington campus. The contest continues an outdoor recycling program that began two years ago when 10 large recycling bins were designed and decorated by IU Bloomington students and placed at strategic locations across campus.

Through the contest, ViS hopes both to brighten the campus with original student artwork and further a larger initiative to create a permanent outdoor recycling system on campus.

"It's a terrific way to involve a lot of students in the sustainability effort on campus and give them a chance to showcase their talents," said IU Bloomington senior and ViS Coordinator Nathan Bower-Bir. "We're actually working with several campus entities to develop a permanent outdoor recycling system that continues the use of student art."

Students of all disciplines are encouraged to submit attention-grabbing two-dimensional designs for the recycling bins. All designs are welcome -- they do not have to relate to recycling or the environment. Individuals or groups are encouraged to submit designs, and multiple submissions will be accepted, but all artists must be current IU students.

The top 10 designs will be chosen by a panel of faculty, staff and student judges, and the committee will award first, second and third place prizes of $50, $25 and $25. The 10 chosen artists will paint their designs on 55-gallon plastic recycling bins, which will be installed in various outdoor locations, providing a convenient opportunity to recycle plastic and aluminum across campus. Materials and space for painting the bins will be provided.

ViS is supporting this project in coordination with Residential Programs and Services, the University Architect's Office and the Department of Physical Plant's Campus and Building Services Division.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to Friday, March 5, 2010. Contest rules and entry forms are available online at https://www.indiana.edu/~sustain/Contest/index.html. Students may e-mail completed entry forms to vsustain@indiana.edu or submit a hard copy to the IU Office of Sustainability, Geology 429.
