IU graduate programs again ranked highly by U.S. News & World Report

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University graduate programs in public and environmental affairs, education, clinical psychology, audiology, business, law and medicine received high rankings in the 2005 edition of U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools."
The School of Public and Environmental Affairs again was ranked third in the country, behind Syracuse and Harvard universities. SPEA also placed six specialty programs on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses in the top 10.
The school's nonprofit management program at IU Bloomington ranked first, and its counterpart at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis ranked fourth. At IU Bloomington, the environmental policy and management program also ranked first, the public finance and budgeting program ranked second, and the public management and administration program ranked third. At IUPUI, the criminal justice policy management program also tied for third.
"It is always good news to hear that our Bloomington public affairs program continues to retain the respect of our colleagues across the country, as shown again in today's ranking of graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report," said Astrid Merget, dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. "Besides the show of respect, it is also a measure of how far SPEA has come in a little over 30 years in what has become an increasingly competitive environment.
"We are genuinely pleased to retain our overall third place rank behind two older private schools -- evidence, we believe, of our school's unflagging energy, ambition and commitment to its mission," Merget added. "Bloomington's public affairs program is tied for first in the country among public universities and again this year placed four majors into the top 10 ranking of specific majors. This is testimony that our colleagues have recognized the breadth, as well as the depth, of our program. In addition, we're pleased that IUPUI for the first time placed two of its majors in the top 10."
Several IU health-related disciplines were highly ranked. IU Bloomington's clinical psychology program (Ph.D.) ranked fourth in the nation. The speech-language pathology program (M.A.) and audiology programs (M.A. and Ph.D.) offered by IUB's Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences ranked ninth and and 13th, respectively. The physical therapy program (D.P.T.) at IUPUI tied for 64th. The School of Social Work's program at IU Bloomington tied for 33rd.
The School of Education at Bloomington was ranked 18th, down one position from last year. Five education graduate programs remained in the top 10 nationally -- counseling/personnel services, curriculum/instruction, elementary education, secondary education and higher education administration. Higher education administration was the highest-ranked at seventh.
"It is good to see that despite the serious financial challenges we've experienced recently our school continues to be ranked as one of the top schools of education in the country," said Gerardo M. Gonzalez, dean of the School of Education. "Having five programs ranked in the top 10 nationally speaks to the enduring quality of our faculty and students."
The Kelley School of Business was ranked 23rd, which was the same as last year, and its production and operations program was ranked 10th as a specialty. The School of Law at IU Bloomington was tied for 40th, compared with 38th last year. The School of Law at IUPUI was tied for 63rd, and the IUPUI health care law program again tied for eighth.
The School of Medicine in Indianapolis was listed as 39th in research, up from 47th a year ago, and was ranked 45th in primary care, compared with 40th last year.
The full rankings by U.S. News & World Report will be released to the public on Monday (April 5) in the book "America's Best Graduate Schools," and many of the rankings will appear in the magazine's issue that will go on sale that day.
