BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music New Music Ensemble (NME) will perform as a guest ensemble at the 2010 International Festival of Young Musicians (DAM Festival) in Prishtina, Kosovo, April 1.

Professor David Dzubay, chair of the Jacobs Composition Department and director of the ensemble, was invited to the festival as a guest composer and lecturer and was asked to bring a group of young musicians to perform his music as well as music by young U.S.-based composers.

The performers include students Daniel Stein, flute; Robert Spady, clarinet; Eric Allen, cello; Teddy Niedermaier, piano; and alumna Liana Gourdjia, violin. In addition to Dzubay and Niedermaier, composers include student Adam Haws, alumnus Bryan Christian and Drinor Zymberi, from Kosovo, who composed a new work for this program.

"I am thrilled to be taking these five incredible musicians to the 2010 DAM Festival in Prishtina," said Dzubay. "They will be excellent representatives of the IU Jacobs School of Music and of the high quality of their generation of U.S.-based performers and composers."

The group will present a preview concert March 29 at noon in Ford-Crawford Hall, including all works except the Zymberi piece, which the NME will perform at its April 20 concert at 8 p.m. in Auer Hall.

The NME, founded in 1974 by Frederick Fox and directed since 1992 by Dzubay, dedicates its efforts to performing a broad spectrum of contemporary music, focusing on works from the past 30 years but also presenting significant works from earlier in the 20th century.

Along with solo, chamber and large ensemble works by composers from around the world, a typical concert includes music by a guest composer and a work by a member of the IU Composition Department, the latter of which is recorded soon after the concert. To date, 10 CDs featuring the NME and music by IU faculty composers have been released.

The International Festival of Young Musicians (DAM Festival) is the first of its kind to be organized in the Republic of Kosovo and presents performances by musicians from around the world. Now in its fourth year, the festival has become one of the most important annual cultural events in Prishtina.
