IU announces merit-based scholarships for prospective students

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 1, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington has announced the continuation of merit-based scholarship opportunities of up to $36,000 for students applying for fall 2011 admission.

Scholarships

The Automatic Academic Scholarship, introduced initially in the fall of 2007 for students applying for the fall of 2008, is one of the only programs across the country that can guarantee scholarship funding based upon students' academic performance before they even apply. It guarantees scholarships for all eligible in-state and out-of-state students based upon standardized test scores and grade point average.

Students can receive up to $9,000 per academic year, and scholarships are renewable for four years of study at IU for students who maintain a 3.0 GPA. Indiana valedictorians are also eligible for the Valedictorian Award, a $1,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years.

Since the Automatic Academic Scholarships were introduced for the fall 2008 entering class, applications and enrollment have increased by more than 30 percent. Because of the increasingly competitive applicant pool of students applying to IU, the scholarship criteria have changed this year in order to maintain the meritorious nature of the scholarships.

"With many high school juniors already in their college search processes, these scholarships will certainly impact their decision to apply to Indiana University when the application for admission goes live in early August," said Sarah Booher, director of the IU Office of Scholarships. "We are one of the only schools in the country that can share concrete scholarship information with students this early in the process, which has shown to significantly impact application and enrollment trends."

For the fall 2010 class, approximately 2,500 freshmen will enroll at IU Bloomington with Automatic Academic Scholarships. Prospective students must submit all application materials for admission by Nov. 1 to be eligible for the scholarships.

New criteria for Automatic Academic Scholarships:

  • IU Excellence -- $36,000 ($9,000 per year) The IU Excellence Scholarship is awarded to students in the state of Indiana who meet each of the following criteria: Indiana resident; minimum SAT score of 1340 or minimum ACT score of 30; minimum GPA of 3.80 on a 4.0 scale.
  • IU Distinction -- $36,000 ($9,000 per year) The IU Distinction Scholarship is awarded to out-of-state students who meet each of the following criteria: out-of-state student (domestic and international); minimum SAT score of 1340 (up from the previous requirement of 1310) or minimum ACT score of 30; minimum GPA of 3.80 on a 4.0 scale.
  • IU Prestige -- $16,000 ($4,000 per year) The IU Prestige Scholarship is awarded to students who meet each of the following criteria: Indiana resident or out-of-state student; minimum SAT score of 1220 or minimum ACT score of 27; minimum GPA of 3.70 on a 4.0 scale.
