Career day at IUPUI to feature public safety agencies, high-tech equipment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 4, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS -- A Black Hawk helicopter, bomb-dismantling robots and police SWAT vehicles will be among the attractions when the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI celebrates its fourth annual Public Safety Career Day on Aug. 16.

The event, from noon to 3 p.m. on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis courtyard, gives current and prospective students, faculty and staff and other community members an opportunity to learn about public safety agencies and organizations and view state-of-the-art equipment.

"This is a great opportunity to meet public safety personnel and find out about the essential work that they do," said Jim White, clinical lecturer in the Criminal Justice & Public Safety program at IUPUI. "The event keeps building in popularity year after year. We had more than 1,000 people attend in 2009, and I'm guessing we'll have 1,500 to 2,000 this year."

Established as part of the IUPUI Summer Bridge Program to introduce first-generation college students to campus life, Public Safety Career Day has grown to become an annual attraction for families and school children as well as college students.

In addition to the impressive sight of an Indiana National Guard helicopter landing on the courtyard, the event will feature the Marion County crime lab's new crime scene investigation vehicle and mobile command vehicles operated by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and Marion County Emergency Management. Also on hand will be fire department ladder trucks and engines, and watercraft used by Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Law Enforcement Division.

Other participating organizations include the Marion County Health Department, Indianapolis Department of Public Works, Indiana State Police, Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, Metropolitan Emergency Communications Agency, Metropolitan Emergency Surge for Healthcare and numerous state, local and federal public safety agencies.

Public Safety Day aligns with two graduate-level programs begun this year by the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at IUPUI: a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Public Safety program and a graduate certificate program in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The school also offers bachelor's degree programs in Civic Leadership, Criminal Justice, Management, Policy Studies and Public Safety Management.
