Call for proposals: Faculty fellowship in the digital arts and humanities

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Data to Insight Center (D2I) of the Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute and the Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities (IDAH) are soliciting proposals for 2011 IDAH Fellows from faculty and staff at IU Bloomington interested in developing digital arts and humanities projects. The projects should entail collaborative research involving the computer and information sciences and the digital arts and humanities at Indiana University Bloomington.
Competitive proposals seeking up to $50,000 per year will address an aspect of digital arts and humanities such as (but not limited to):
• Extensible infrastructure for creating or displaying digital arts
• Humanities data to insight, including visualization and development of innovative digital collections
• Development of new methods for analyzing text, language, semantics, or syntax
The grants are intended to support early development of innovative research likely to compete favorably for external funding in the future and/or produce translational deliverables such as new software, a demonstration collection, or other tangible output that advances the goals of the Data to Insight Center.
Successful proposals will be collaborative projects with one or more principal investigators (PIs) from the computing sciences and one or more PIs from the humanities. Recipients are required to write semi-annual reports, participate in joint bi-weekly seminars with the Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities Fellows, and present results of research upon completion. Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of peers and should be clear, direct, specific, and written so they can be understood by experts outside the field.
Funding is available for one year, although applicants are welcome to apply again for continuing support. D2I expects to award up to two grants this year. No proposal or project (no matter how many applications it comprises) should seek more than $50,000 in any one year.
An individual may be an investigator in no more than two proposals that respond to this solicitation. Faculty, professional staff, or other full-time employees of IU Bloomington may request funds. Proposals may involve collaboration with colleagues at other institutions, but only the expenses incurred by IU personnel or services rendered at IU Bloomington are eligible for support.

About the Data to Insight Center
The Data to Insight Center (D2I) undertakes research to harness the vast stores of digital data being produced by modern computational resources, allowing scientists and companies to make better use of these data and find the important meaning that lies within them. D2I creates tools and visualizations for working with very large data sets, develops methods to ensure data provenance (quality and authenticity), and builds methods for listing and discovering data sets. D2I is part of Pervasive Technology Institute (PTI) at Indiana University. About the Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities
The Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities (IDAH) links a network of disciplinary experts, faculty, and support staff who work in interdisciplinary teams on collection-building, tool-building, and the development of appropriate methods for study and analysis of collections. The expertise of the faculty from the School of Informatics and Computer Science, School of Library and Information Science, and highly qualified professional staff at the Digital Library Program and University Information Technology Services work together with the disciplinary expertise of the arts and humanities faculty to redefine research and scholarship in the arts and humanities on the IU Bloomington campus.
