Leonard Slatkin will conduct the IU Philharmonic Orchestra on Sept. 15 in a season-opening concert at the Musical Arts Center. The program will include Cindy McTee's Double Play and Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, Op.14.

On October 16 in the Musical Arts Center, famed soprano and Jacobs alumna Angela Brown will present "Opera from a Sistah's Point of View," a concert that was originally scheduled for the 2010 the IU Summer Music Festival. Her one-woman show aims to dispel the myths of opera through lively commentary on opera plots and characters, shimmering arias, poignant art songs and moving spirituals.

The Jacobs School will present several tribute concerts this fall, including remembering renowned composer and former Jacobs faculty member Bernhard Heiden on Saturday, Sept. 11, in a 100th Birthday concert that features his compositions and an array of current faculty performers. Former students will helm the Maidee H. and Jackson A. Seward organ to honor Professor Emerita Marilyn Keiser in a Sept. 18 legacy concert, and Jacobs Professor Carmen Téllez will conduct the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble in the Oct. 10 Arvo Pärt Jubilee, a 75th birthday celebration of the Estonian composer.

Other fall highlights include the Oct. 5 beginning of an 18-month recital series featuring the organ works of J. S. Bach, performed by Janette Fishell, chair of the Jacobs Organ Department. Choral fans can enjoy the Mozart Requiem presented by the University Singers with Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Jacobs faculty member Richard Tang Yuk on Nov. 18. In addition to its annual Chimes of Christmas event on Dec. 8, this semester will find the Singing Hoosiers in a performance on Oct. 1 and repeated on Oct. 2 of the music of Hoagy Carmichael and Friends.

IU Opera Theater will open its 62nd season with a new production of Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) Sept. 24 and 25, and Oct. 1 and 2, with sets by Professor C. David Higgins, guest stage direction from Nicholas Muni and music direction from Professor Arthur Fagen.

IU Ballet Theater will open its new season with the fall ballet "A Choreographer's Evening" on Oct. 8 and 9. This celebration of the role of the choreographer will feature Twyla Tharp's Noir, Ballanchine's Allegro Brilliante and Glinka Pas de Trois, followed by Joshua Bergasse's The Baker Dances set to music by David N. Baker.

The breadth and number of performance opportunities at the IU Jacobs School of Music are unparalleled in college music study, with the school offering more than 1,100 performances a year, including seven fully staged operas on a stage comparable in size to that of the Metropolitan Opera House.
