Brio Pop Society puts new spin on IU's annual Live From Bloomington CD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 14, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Musicians and songwriters from the Indiana University and Bloomington communities may now submit original songs and lyrics to Live From Bloomington, a Union Board committee, for the opportunity to collaborate with student arrangers from IU's Jacobs School of Music. The collaboration will be fostered through the newly formed Brio Pop Society, a group that seeks to blend contemporary music with classic and everything in between.

Loren Gurman, creative director for Live From Bloomington, said "Brio," the Italian word for passion, is what he hopes to inspire from the initiative.

"The idea for The Brio Pop Society began when I was trying to think of a way to finally bridge the Jacobs School of Music talent with the local music scene talent," he said. "What I realized is that having composition students act as arrangers for songwriters might be a great way to start. Most songwriters generally don't think to find an arranger, or perhaps don't know of where they can find one. So the thought is that if we could find composers willing to arrange in a pop setting, we could finally make the two worlds of music come together."

Once selected, Brio Pop Society artists will work with music students to compose original pieces, develop a concept album, perform live and receive financial compensation.

Loren said a Live from Bloomington studio album will also be released on iTunes.

Musicians, poets and songwriters can submit a typed lyrics sheet and recording of an original song to LFB@indiana.edu for consideration by Sept. 22 at 5 p.m.
