IU appoints new assistant vice presidents for university regional affairs

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Vice President for University Regional Affairs, Planning and Policy John Applegate today (Sept. 30) announced the appointment of three assistant vice presidents for university regional affairs.
Sharon K.Calhoon from IU Kokomo, Timothy Rivard from IU East and Rebecca Torstrick from IU South Bend will serve as assistant vice presidents working to advance IU's programs and interests around the university and the state, Applegate said. They will divide their time equally between teaching and administrative responsibilities on their home campuses and their new university positions.
"I am pleased to have three such experienced and talented faculty members from our regional campuses to help shape the future of Indiana University statewide," Applegate said. "As we continue to make progress on many fronts across the regional campuses, their insights and proven abilities will be invaluable."
Calhoon is an associate professor of psychology at IU Kokomo and has been a faculty member there since 1989. She has served as the director of Institutional Research on the campus since 2009 and previously served as assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs and director of the Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment.
Rivard, a professor of English at IU East, has been a faculty member since 1990. He currently serves as the chief academic advisor for the School of Humanities and Social Science, where he served as dean from 2007 to 2009. He was chair of the humanities and fine arts division from 2000 to 2007.
Torstrick has been a faculty member at IU South Bend since 1996. She is currently a professor of anthropology and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She served as director of the women's studies program from 2004 to 2007.
The three assistant vice presidents were recommended by a search committee that included representatives from all eight IU campuses and was chaired by Associate Vice President for University Academic Planning Barbara Bichelmeyer. The new appointees are all members of the Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET). They will work closely with a variety of statewide committees and will serve as liaisons to the Blueprint for Student Attainment initiative, which is getting under way on all of the regional campuses.
