Fund-raising campaign honored with Benton Medallion

The fund-raising campaign that brought in $504 million in gifts and pledges for Indiana University Bloomington has been awarded the Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion from IU.

The medallion, which has previously been awarded only to individuals, was presented to the campaign by IU President Myles Brand and was accepted by the four national co-chairs: William P. Carmichael of Chicago, Donald C. "Danny" Danielson of Indianapolis, Barbara B. Jacobs of Cleveland, and John F. "Jack" Kimberling of Palm Springs, Calif. The medal recognizes significant service to IU programs, students and faculty.

The Endowment Campaign for IU Bloomington is the largest fund-raising campaign ever completed at IU. It raised IU from the bottom half to first place among Big Ten universities in the number of endowed faculty positions university-wide. The campaign, which was launched in July 1994 and concluded in December 2000, exceeded its goal of $350 million by 44 percent.

"The campaign epitomized what IU is about -- pursuing individual efforts and collaboration for the good of all," said IU President Myles Brand.

The bronze Benton Medallion features a portion of the famous Thomas Hart Benton mural in the IU Auditorium on one side and the seal of the university on the other.
