Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County celebrates latest graduates, distinguished alumni award recipient

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County (LBMC), a program in partnership between Indiana University Bloomington Continuing Studies and the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, on Wednesday (April 27) honored this year's 25 graduates and the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, John Zody.

Susan Moke, director of communications for IU's executive vice president of university regional affairs, planning and policy, and communications advisor to IU first lady Laurie Burns McRobbie, was the keynote speaker at the ceremony, which took place at at the Fountain Square Mall Ballroom in downtown Bloomington.

LBMC is a seven-month program designed to develop leadership skills and promote community involvement. Participants take part in sessions focusing on specific aspects of community life. In addition, each participant works with a small group of classmates to complete a project related to a specific community concern. This year's projects include a jazz festival, an initiative to remove health and wellness barriers for the Latino community, a fundraiser to support literacy programs for the Monroe County Community School Corp., a study on resource sharing among nonprofit agencies and a recycling forum for local businesses.

"The Class of 2011 group projects will benefit this community immediately and for years to come," said LBMC director Mary Catherine Carmichael. "By their efforts, these students have distinguished themselves. I feel there are great things in store for each of them and for this community as they turn their LBMC experience into action."

The LBMC Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, John Zody, is the resource development director for Ivy Tech Community College. He served as chief of staff for former Congressman Baron Hill and as communications director for the late Gov. Frank O'Bannon and former Gov. Joe Kernan. Zody has been twice-named a Sagamore of the Wabash for his service to state government. He holds a bachelor's degree in public affairs from IU and is currently pursuing his master's degree in public affairs at IU.

IU Bloomington Continuing Studies provides opportunities for adults to engage in lifelong learning. Programs include General Studies degrees, Adult Student Resources and diverse noncredit courses in Lifelong Learning and Professional Development, Mini University and Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County.
