Jacobs professor Jeff Nelsen to speak at TEDx conference at the Buskirk-Chumley May 14

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 10, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- If you think that pig farming and opera singing have nothing in common, think again. Jeff Nelsen, associate professor of horn at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, is living proof that they do.

Nelsen will be sharing some of the insights from his unusual background as one of the featured speakers at the TEDxBloomington conference, "The Wisdom of Play," this Saturday, May 14, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington.

"I have learned so much from watching TED talks on YouTube," Nelsen said. "These presentations cover anything and everything on earth, and always illuminate new information and insightful perspectives. I am elated to be able to give back to the TED community and also honored to be a part of the impressive roster of TED presenters."

Nelsen grew up on a pig farm in Western Canada with opera-singing, pig-farming parents who provided him with a wide palate of career choices.

Now a world-renowned horn player, educator and fearless performance coach, Nelsen has been inspirational as a musician and mentor on five continents for over 20 years. He is perhaps best known for his eight-year tenure as hornist of Canadian Brass.

Nelsen has also held positions in the Montreal, Vancouver and Winnipeg symphony orchestras. Other appearances as an orchestral performer include with the New York Philharmonic; Boston, National, (Kennedy Center, D.C.), Cincinnati and Indianapolis Symphonies; National Arts Center Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company.

Nelsen has performed the complete run of two shows on Broadway and toured with popular entertainers including Michael Bolton and Barry Manilow. He has an extensive discography ranging from film, TV, Broadway show and video game soundtracks, pop and jazz music, solos, chamber, symphonic and operatic repertoire.

Aside from creating musical magic, Nelsen is an enthusiastic magician and often adds touches of illusionary arts to performances.

Nelsen shares his passion for fearless performance with every note he plays as well as through his annual "Fearless Performance for Musicians" summer seminar at Indiana University.

He is a Yamaha performing artist and clinician.

About TEDx

TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate "ideas worth spreading." Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives, including TEDx.

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At TEDxBloomington, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
