IU Press joins Books at JSTOR initiative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 28, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Press and 12 other publishers, including leading not-for-profit research institutes, international organizations, university presses and independent publishers, are the latest to join Books at JSTOR, an initiative that will add more than 20,000 e-books to one of the most widely used and well-known online academic resources in the world.

The publishers also include: Boydell & Brewer, Brookings Institution Press, Edinburgh University Press, University of Illinois Press, University of Michigan Press, National Academies Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, RAND Corp., Russell Sage Foundation, University of Texas Press, University of Toronto Press and United Nations Publications.

"Partnering with Books at JSTOR offers a tremendous opportunity to enhance the worldwide dissemination of the electronic editions of IU Press books," said Janet Rabinowitch, director of IU Press. "A special advantage of Books at JSTOR will be its integration with JSTOR's prestigious journals platform, through which all of IU Press's journals, both complete back runs and current issues, are already available. JSTOR's combined database of books and journals will significantly enhance the accessibility of IU Press books and journals content to scholars, students, and librarians around the world and increase IUP's electronic revenue."

IU Press will contribute around 700 titles when Books at JSTOR launches and will add new titles as print editions are published, Rabinowitch said.

Laura Brown, JSTOR managing director, said adding IU Press and the other publishers brings valuable, new dimensions to Books at JSTOR.

"We are thrilled that this set of publishers has chosen to work with us," Brown said. "Delivering deeply linked, vital scholarly research to libraries, scholars, and students worldwide is our No. 1 goal. With these new partners and the nine already on board, we are laying the foundation for a collaboration that will offer a transformative integration of book and journal literature that can enable new models for scholarly communication in the future."

Edinburgh University Press and Toronto University Press, as well as Boydell & Brewer and the multi-national United Nations, are the first of what JSTOR and its partners hope will be a growing set of publishers outside the United States that will bring the best thinking and writing of researchers and policy makers from around the world to the initiative.

Books at JSTOR now has 22 publisher partners and expects to launch with close to 30 presses. The first books will be available at JSTOR beginning in June 2012. All books will be preserved in Portico, the leading digital preservation service for the scholarly community. For more information, see https://about.jstor.org/books.
