The theme for the conferece is "Powering Life Sciences Entrepreneurship in Indiana," which is something that medical device makers in north central Indiana have been doing. According to recent BioCrossroads report, 220 life sciences start-up companies have been formed since 2004, or an average of 44 per year. This has been a dramatic turnaround in a state where statistics for overall entrepreneurial activity generally rank it very low among the 50 states.

"This conference will examine existing and emerging mechanisms to maintain and increase the momentum that has been building," said George Telthorst, director of the Center for the Business of Life Sciences (CBLS) in Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. "Speakers and panelists representing funders, business advisors and entrepreneurs will discuss Indiana's progress and the obstacles that still exist to greater activity."

Hasler and other representatives from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. will explain the new Elevate Indiana initiative. Participants will leave with a better appreciation of the state of entrepreneurship in Indiana's life sciences economy and insights into the opportunities that exist for their organizations to play a role.

The conference series is presented by the IU Kelley School of Business, its Center for the Business of Life Sciences, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. and BioCrossroads.

The conference will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College, 610 Wooster Road, Winona Lake, Ind. The registration fee is $125. Registration and additional information is available online at https://kelley.iu.edu/CBLS/conferences/registration/page16551.html or by contacting Kelli Conder at the Kelley School at 812-856-0915 or kconder@indiana.edu.

Following registration and networking from 8 to 9 a.m., OrthoWorx CEO David Floyd will introduce the keynote speaker, Hasler, who was appointed as Indiana's secretary of commerce in September after an extensive 31-year career at global pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Co.

At Eli Lilly, Hasler served in several leadership positions, most recently as vice president for global marketing. He was responsible for the commercial strategy and market performance of Lilly's pharmaceutical portfolio. He also had been chief marketing officer for Eli Lilly USA and led commercial operations of Eli Lilly's largest European group and in Brazil. He is a graduate of DePauw University and has a MBA from Duke University.

After a mid-morning break, the conference will continue at 10:15 a.m. with a panel discussion, "Show Me the Money -- Raising Money Today," moderated by Stephen M. Hourigan, CEO of Elevate Ventures. The panel will consist of Oscar Moralez, co-founder and managing partner of Stepstone Business Partners; Curt Rossman, manager of the Indiana office of Credit Suisse; Karen Goldner, president of Main Street Venture Fund; and Tom Cox, managing director of Seneca Partners.

After a networking lunch and beginning at 12:30 p.m., Brad Bishop, executive director of OrthoWorx will introduce Mike Mozenter, president of Jumpstart Community Advisors, who will give the presentation, "Catalyzing Entrepreneurship, JumpStart and the Indiana REAP Project."

The conference's second panel discussion, which will begin at 1:30 p.m., will feature Indiana life sciences entrepreneurs to tell their stories "from the front." Moderated by Gregory Coy, a partner and chair of the Life Sciences Group at Krieg DeVault, the panel will consist of Les Ivie, president and CEO of F Cubed LLC; Greg Odle, vice president and general manager of OrthoPediatrics; Dan Raftery, founder and chief scientific officer of Matrix-Bio; and Greg Stalcup, president and CEO of Sites Medical.

Telthorst will offer closing comments and wrap up the day's events at 3:15 p.m.
