IU Alumni Association recognizes students, alumni groups

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Seven Indiana University students are taking on this academic year with some extra money, thanks to scholarships presented by the IU Alumni Association.
The Charles and Jo Ann Linsmith Scholarship and the Jerry Foster Memorial Scholarship were presented at the awards banquet during Cream and Crimson Weekend in June. The banquet also recognized the IUAA's constituent societies and chapters.
Established by Jo Ann Linsmith, BS'72, the scholarship is available for children and grandchildren of IUAA staff members, student leaders of IUAA-sponsored organizations and IUAA students. Selection is based on outstanding character, financial need and academic achievement.
Receiving the Linsmith Scholarship were:
- Evin Ehrreich, of Columbus, Ind., a junior majoring in nursing at IUPUC. Since 2010, she has been the vice president of the Student Alumni Association.
- Anthony Nastase, a junior majoring in biochemistry at IUPUI, who has served as vice president of the Student Organization for Alumni Relations and executive director of the IUPUI Regatta this past school year. From La Porte, Ind., he currently serves on the IUAA's Board of Managers as the student representative.
- Ashley Schmitt, a junior majoring in accounting at IU South Bend, who was SAA vice president. From Nappanee, Ind., she is the vice president of communications for SAA and president of her sorority, Theta Phi Alpha.
- Samantha Stutsman, a freshman majoring in journalism at IU Bloomington, who was an Indiana Alumni Magazine intern while a senior at Bloomington (Ind.) High School North.
- Blake Wathen, of Evansville, Ind., director of SAA's Little 500 Committee. An accounting and finance major entering his junior year at IU Bloomington, he is now the SAA's director of engagement.
- Kimberly Watson, a junior majoring in marketing at IU Bloomington, who was SAA's director of Hoosier Village and senior experience. From Granger, Ind., she is now the SAA's vice president of community.
At the same awards banquet, the IUAA presented the Jerry Foster Memorial Scholarship to incoming freshman and health administration major Will Disinger. The scholarship is awarded to a child of an alumni chapter leader, who currently serves as an officer or board member. The Foster Scholarship was established in memory of Jerry Foster, BS'74, who served as IUAA's alumni chapter director.
Disinger's father, Bob Disinger, has been active on the board of the Southwest Indiana Chapter of the IUAA for 12 years. Will was academically strong and a Core 40 honors student at Jasper (Ind.) High School.
The IUAA also bestowed awards on its constituent societies for programs benefiting IU alumni. Two alumni groups received awards for best practices and excellence in alumni relations. The IU Jacobs School of Music Alumni Association was recognized for its alumni T-shirt campaign called "Wearing Your Jacobs School of Music Alumni Pride." The IU School of Law-Indianapolis received recognition for its faculty grant program.
Several groups received awards for outstanding student engagement. The alumni associations of the IU School of Law-Indianapolis, the IU School of Medicine, the IU School of Dentistry and the IU School of Social Work were recognized for their collaboration on "Damages" -- a simulated interdisciplinary learning experience for attorneys, doctors, dentists and social workers. The IUPUC Alumni Association's Mocktail Reception was also recognized.
The IU Alumni Association also recognized its chapters that have exhibited the best practices in one of the following Keystones of Excellence areas:
- Community Service: Johnson County (Ind.) free recycling sites
- Diversity: Chicago and Lakeshore Region, Hot Art in the Summertime event
- Lifelong Learning: Southwest Florida, IU Brunch Series
- Membership: Central Carolina, annual chapter membership program
- Scholarship: Whitewater Valley (Ind.) annual scholarship program
- Service to IU: Washington, D.C., Washington Football Weekend
- Social: St. Joseph County (Ind.) "Women's Night Out" Talbots event
- Student Recruitment & Engagement: Northeast Indiana, Hoosiers of Tomorrow mentoring program
