IU Bloomington provost honored by American Philosophical Association

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec. 2, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Karen Hanson, the provost of Indiana University Bloomington and IU executive vice president, has been awarded the 2011 Philip Quinn Prize for Service to Philosophy and Philosophers, given by the American Philosophical Association.

Hanson has served the American Philosophical Association as interim chair of the APA board, secretary-treasurer of the Central Division, chair of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Priorities and Problems of the APA and delegate to the American Council of Learned Societies, and in numerous other capacities.

"We regard this as the highest recognition we can give to a colleague for service to our profession," said David Schrader, executive director of the American Philosophical Association. "Karen has served APA and Indiana University with great distinction over a long period of time. She joins a small but very distinguished group of Quinn Prize recipients."

The Quinn Prize has been given annually since 2007 in memory of Philip L. Quinn, a philosopher and theologian who was a faculty member at the University of Notre Dame and served for many years as president of the APA Central Division. The prize carries a $2,500 award and an engraved plaque.

"Phil Quinn was a wonderful philosopher and a fount of wisdom and endless support for other philosophers and for the larger profession," Hanson said. "I am touched -- and enormously grateful -- to be selected for the prize named in his honor."

Hanson will become provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Minnesota in February 2012. She has been IU Bloomington provost and executive vice president since 2007 and previously served as dean of the Hutton Honors College and chair of the Department of Philosophy. She has been an IU faculty member since 1976, currently holding the title Rudy Professor of Philosophy.

Hanson's principal research interests are in philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, ethics, aesthetics and American philosophy. She has published many articles and essays and is the author of The Self Imagined: Philosophical Reflections on the Social Character of Psyche and a co-editor of Romantic Revolutions: Criticism and Theory.

She also has been an associate editor of Journal of Social Philosophy, a member of the editorial board of American Philosophical Quarterly and a trustee for the American Society for Aesthetics. She is an adjunct faculty member at IU in the comparative literature, American studies and gender studies departments and has won numerous teaching awards and a number of research grants.

Hanson received a B.A. degree in philosophy and mathematics, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota in 1970 and Ph.D. and A.M. degrees in philosophy from Harvard in 1980.
