BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- "Stomp," the innovative performance that uses trash bins and other junkyard items as musical instruments, will return to IU Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 and 28.

From its beginnings as a street routine in the United Kingdom, "Stomp" has grown into an internationally recognized production over the past 13 years, having performed in over 350 cities in 36 countries. The production has won an Olivier Award for Best Choreography (London's Tony Award), a New York Obie Award, a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatre Experience and a Special Citation from Best Plays.

"Stomp" is directed and created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas and continues its run with the ongoing sell-out off-Broadway production at New York's Orpheum Theatre, a North American tour and two productions overseas, a London company and a European tour.

This may not be the first time that "Stomp" has seen the IU Auditorium stage, but the energetic percussion innovators have added some new surprises. The new piece "Paint Cans" evolved out of the "Boxes" routine in the Las Vegas show, and "Donuts" is a piece that implements huge tractor tire inner tubes worn around the waist on a bungee cord.

For many years, the creators had looked for a "Stomp" equivalent of the Latin percussion instrument the guiro, a gourd-shaped open-ended instrument with ridges along the side that are rubbed by a wooden stick to create its sound. The climactic trashcan sequence "Bins" has been restructured to include a guiro-like instrument: strip-lighting recycling containers.

STOMP

"Simply put, 'Stomp' is the most fun you'll have this winter," IU Auditorium director Doug Booher said. "It's the perfect way to impress a date or to introduce kids to the spectacle of live performance. It's a night you won't soon forget and is one of those shows our audiences want to see again and again."

In anticipation of "Stomp," IU Auditorium and Hoosier Hills Food Bank are partnering to "Stomp Out Hunger." Community residents can drop off donation items at collection areas in College Mall as well as Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Audience members can also drop off donation items at the designated collection areas in the IU Auditorium during both "Stomp" performances.
