IU workshops will help students learn to weatherize their homes for winter

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 24, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's Office of Sustainability, in partnership with the student group Volunteers in Sustainability, will host three weatherization workshops for IU students to learn how to weatherize their homes for winter.

The workshops will provide participants with background information on average home energy usage and energy efficiency, as well as providing hands-on learning opportunities on weatherization installation practices. All registered participants will receive a free weatherization kit for use in their own homes, including weather stripping, removable rope caulk and other weatherization materials.

"It's important for students living off-campus to have access to more information and resources to make their lifestyles more sustainable," said Rachel Irvine, Living Sustainably Off-Campus coordinator for the IU Office of Sustainability. "It's amazing how even small weatherization adjustments can have a huge impact on the energy efficiency of a home. These workshops will help students become more aware of their energy usage and teach them an easy way to reduce their energy consumption, especially during the coldest months of the year when energy use tends to be higher than average."

Workshops will be led by IU Director of Sustainability Bill Brown, who is also an architect and LEED Accredited Professional.

"Most students live off campus, and a big part of their expenses relate to utility payments," Brown said. "These workshops will offer simple techniques to recover those lost dollars while conserving energy and water resources."

The winter weatherization workshops are the first in a series of workshops on sustainability-related topics to be hosted by the IU Office of Sustainability during the spring 2012 semester. The workshops will be held at E-House, the new home of the Office of Sustainability, at 704 E. 10th St., from 4 to 5 p.m. today, Jan. 24; from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27; and from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 1.
