University-wide Distinguished Teaching Awards to be presented at Indiana University

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 13, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- "A university cannot render distinguished service to its constituency without a distinguished faculty; therefore, the selection of faculty personnel is of first importance," legendary IU President Herman B Wells told trustees in 1942 when he spoke of his vision for the university and his aim to attract the best and brightest faculty members to Indiana.

As the university marks its founding 192 years ago this spring, President Michael A. McRobbie will salute continued great teaching at Indiana University as he recognizes individuals in honor of Founders Day at the 2012 Celebration of Distinguished Teaching dinner on April 20.

"Indiana University's outstanding teachers, scholars and researchers continually demonstrate their strong commitment to the university's fundamental missions of excellence in education and research," McRobbie said. "These awards honor our most exceptional faculty, their devotion to their students, their dedication to their disciplines and their tireless efforts on behalf of Indiana University."

Eleven faculty members and four doctoral students will be recognized for outstanding teaching, research and service to the university. The award recipients teach at IU Bloomington, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and IU South Bend.

New Distinguished Professors

Four IU professors will be elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professor. Three are from the IU Bloomington campus and one is from IUPUI.

From the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington, Annie Lang, a professor of telecommunications and cognitive science; Richard DiMarchi, the Standiford H. Cox Professor of Chemistry and Linda and Jack Gill Chair in Biomolecular Sciences; and David Pisoni, professor of psychological and brain sciences and cognitive science and Chancellor's Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Cognitive Science, will each receive the rank of Distinguished Professor.

From the IU School of Medicine at IUPUI, George W. Sledge Jr., professor of medicine and pathology and the Ballvé-Lantero Professor of Oncology, also will receive the rank of Distinguished Professor.

Teaching award winners

The Lieber Memorial Awards for distinguished teaching will go to faculty and doctoral students on the IU Bloomington and South Bend campuses.

James D. Kelly, an associate professor in the School of Journalism at IU Bloomington, will receive the Herman Frederic Lieber Memorial Award. Yi Cheng, a professor of mathematical sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at IU South Bend, will receive the Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Award.

Christopher Basgier, a doctoral student in English; Christopher Todd Beer, a doctoral student in sociology; Andy Oler, a doctoral student in English; and Nick Phillips, a doctoral student in literatures in Spanish, will receive the Lieber Memorial Teaching Associate Award at IU Bloomington.

The Frederic Bachman Lieber Award was established in 1954 by Katie D. Bachman in honor of her grandson. The Herman Frederic Lieber Award was originally sponsored by the IU Foundation and is now sponsored by Mrs. Herman Lieber of Indianapolis.

The President's Award, which was established in 1974 to recognize outstanding teaching, research or service, will go to Faridah Pawan, an associate professor in the Department of Literacy, Culture and Language Education in the School of Education at IU Bloomington.

Heidi Ross, professor of educational policy studies and comparative education in the School of Education at IU Bloomington, and Mark Turrentine, professor of surgery at the IU School of Medicine at IUPUI, will receive the John W. Ryan Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Programs and Studies.

The Ryan Award was initiated in 1991 and named for the man who was president of IU from 1971 to 1987. John Ryan, who died in August, was instrumental in fostering IU's commitment to excellence in international education. The award honors faculty members or librarians who have made exceptional contributions to the university's international programs and studies.

The W. George Pinnell Award for Outstanding Service will be given to Mike Keen, a professor of sociology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at IU South Bend.

The University Faculty Council established the Pinnell Award in 1988, honoring the memory of the former executive vice president of the university who also served during his career as president of the IU Foundation and dean of IU's Kelley School of Business. Pinnell was known for his stewardship, leadership, initiative and service to the university, the state and the national government. The award recognizes faculty members or librarians who have shown exceptional breadth of involvement and depth of commitment in service to the university, their profession or the public.

Beth Gazley, an associate professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IU Bloomington, will receive the Thomas Ehrlich Award for Excellence in Service Learning.

The Thomas Ehrlich Award is named for the man who was IU's president from 1987 to 1994. The recipient becomes Indiana University's nominee for the national Campus Compact Thomas Ehrlich Award for Service Learning the following year.
