IU Office of Sustainability seeks 2012-13 interns

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 16, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Continuing a tradition of student engagement in sustainability-related program development and research, the Indiana University Office of Sustainability is recruiting its 11th group of sustainability interns for the 2012-13 academic year.

The IU Office of Sustainability addresses issues of environmental, economic and social sustainability in campus operations, academic programs and university-community relations, building upon a program started by the IU Task Force on Sustainability. The student interns, selected from both undergraduate and graduate student applicants, will work on a broad array of issues related to sustainability, under the mentorship of IU faculty and staff.

A Prairie in the Planters

Since its inception in 2007, the Internship Program in Sustainability has strived to promote experiential learning as an integral part of the campus sustainability initiative. Some student interns will continue work on previous projects, such as Living Sustainably Off-Campus or coordinating sustainable purchasing efforts, while others will pilot new sustainability partnerships in the Greek community and at the IU Health Center.

"Working collaboratively with dedicated faculty and staff mentors, these brilliant young innovators create new initiatives that conserve precious resources while enhancing the quality of campus life," said Director of Sustainability Bill Brown. "They work easily across academic and operational boundaries, transforming the campus into an integrated learning lab. It is no wonder these students are snapped up by employers, including three former sustainability interns who now work for Indiana University."

The academic year internship program allows students the possibility of finding connections between their projects, the academic programs in which they are enrolled and other extracurricular activities in which they may be engaged. Interns will also participate in a seminar in sustainability, helping to develop a learning community among participants in the program.

"The seminar provides an important space for collaboration among interns, each of whom enters the program with different leadership, professional and academic experiences," said Emilie Rex, assistant director of sustainability. "We use the seminar to contextualize that passion, intelligence and experience with our knowledge of the IU systems, processes, policies and stakeholders, who are the real champions of sustainability on this campus. Our students understand early on that these internships are dependent on their ability to build strong relationships with each other and within the IU and Bloomington communities."

The Office of Sustainability is accepting applications for 10 new internships for the 2012-13 academic year.
