All academic buildings now may apply to participate in IU Energy Challenge

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 23, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the first time, all Indiana University Bloomington buildings will be eligible to participate in the fall 2012 IU Energy Challenge, set for Oct. 22 to Nov. 12. The utility metering project completed this spring provides Energy Challenge organizers access to electricity and water usage data for every building on campus.

"This is great news for all occupants of previously unmetered buildings who have waited patiently to be a part of the Energy Challenge," said Energy Challenge Coordinator Carolyn Raider. "It's a milestone for the Bloomington campus."

Competition organizers will be reaching out to spring 2012 challenge participants to invite them to re-enter the competition. Academic buildings new to the competition are invited to apply at energychallenge.indiana.edu. All competing buildings must designate a building representative to act as a liaison between building occupants and challenge organizers.

"Energy Challenge shows what can happen when everyone takes responsibility for needless waste of energy, water and money," said Bill Brown, IU director of sustainability. "Simple changes in behavior, when pooled together with a few thousand other creative stewards, can result in significant progress."

Over the seven Energy Challenges to date, IU has saved 3,673,619 kilowatt hours of electricity and 7,378,873 gallons of water. When combined with the savings seen throughout the year as a result of behaviors learned during the challenges, IU has saved more than $1.2 million in utility bills and has avoided emitting more than 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
