Indiana University dean named chair-elect of Council of Graduate Schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 9, 2013

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- James Wimbush, dean of the University Graduate School at Indiana University and professor of business administration in the IU Kelley School of Business, has been named chair-elect of the Council of Graduate Schools for 2013.

The council's board of directors announced its officers for the coming year in December. The new board was seated at the organization's 52nd annual meeting Dec. 5 in Washington, D.C.

Wimbush is an acknowledged national authority on business ethics as they relate to human resource practices. Prior to his selection as dean of the University Graduate School in 2006, he served in multiple positions for IU and its Kelley School of Business, including chair of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship, chair of doctoral programs in business, chair of the Kelley MBA program and IU Bloomington associate dean of the faculties.

After his term as chair-elect, Wimbush will serve as board chair of the Council of Graduate Schools from December 2013 to December 2014.

Robert Augustine, dean of the graduate school, research and international programs at Eastern Illinois University, became the 2013 board chair of the council. Augustine has served as the graduate dean at EIU since 2000. His achievements in this role include the establishment of criteria for assessing the quality of graduate programs and applying these criteria to increase program quality, enhance enrollments, develop new degree programs and link funding to program quality.

Beginning three-year terms on the board are Nancy Marcus of Florida State University, Steven Matson of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and John Stevenson of the University of Colorado, Boulder. George Justice, the University of Missouri, and Allison Sekuler, McMaster University, will serve one-year terms on the board.

The Council of Graduate Schools is governed by a 12-member board of directors drawn from member institutions. Board members serve for set terms. Lisa Tedesco of Emory University will remain on the executive committee for one year as immediate past chair.

The council is an organization of more than 500 institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada engaged in graduate education, research and the preparation of candidates for advanced degrees. Among U.S. institutions, members award 92 percent of the doctoral degrees and 81 percent of the master's degrees. The organization's mission is to improve and advance graduate education, which it accomplishes through advocacy in the federal policy arena, research, and the development and dissemination of best practices.
