IU Jacobs School's Summer Music series features array of world-class concerts

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- As part of Indiana University's third annual Summer Festival of the Arts, the Jacobs School of Music will present Summer Music, an offering of more than 50 free and ticketed events June 14 to July 23. The series will include an array of world-class concerts featuring orchestra, harp, chamber music, piano, band, percussion, opera, jazz and other special events.

Highlights this year include the triennial USA International Harp Competition, legendary pianist Distinguished Professor Menahem Pressler, the Pacifica and Rubens quartets, jazz trumpeter Jason Palmer and special programming for each of the three Festival Orchestra concerts.

The popular Summer Band concerts, featuring the conducting talents of Stephen W. Pratt and David C. Woodley from the IU Department of Bands, will be held on the lawn of the Musical Arts Center. The concerts, featuring marches, popular favorites, solos and light classics, are scheduled for 7 p.m. June 26 and July 3 and 10.

While a full list of all Summer Music series performances is available online, highlighted events include:

  • June 14: Pressler's performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 17 with the Festival Orchestra, conducted by Arthur Fagen, kicks off the summer series.
  • June 16: Kevin Murphy will direct a staged version of Mozart's "The Impresario."
  • June 19: Opera workshop, directed by Patricia Stiles.
  • June 20: The Symphony Orchestra, composed of Jacobs students, is conducted by Cliff Colnot, principal conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's contemporary MusicNOW series and of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. A second concert is July 18.
  • June 22: "A Tribute to Freddie Hubbard: An Indianapolis Jazz Legend" features Jacobs School of Music faculty with trumpeter Jason Palmer.
  • June 23: Pianist Emile Naoumoff performs a recital in Auer Hall.
  • June 25: Dominick DiOrio will direct Henry Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas."
  • June 27: The Rubens Quartet recital. A second recital follows July 2, with violist Jonathan Gertner, and the quartet will perform with pianist Chih-Yi Chen on July 5.
  • June 28: The Steve Zegree Vocal Jazz Camp Final Concert, with vocal camp participants directed by Duane Davis, Peter Eldridge, Michael Wheaton, Ly Wilder, DiOrio and Zegree.
  • July 3: Irish pianist John O'Conor will offer a recital of Beethoven sonatas.
  • July 6 and 7: A "Pressler and Friends" program featuring several members of the Pacifica Quartet -- Simin Ganatra, violin; Sibbi Bernhardsson, viola; and Brandon Vamos, cello -- in concert with Pressler.
  • July 10 to 20: The ninth USA International Harp Competition will bring more than 50 harpists from 21 countries to Bloomington, ending with a concert including the Festival Orchestra conducted by David Effron.
  • July 10: Members and guests of the American Liszt Society will present the rarely heard "Hexameron" -- containing six composers (including Liszt and his contemporaries) and six performers -- in addition to other Liszt works for solo piano. Performers include Mark DeZwaan, Read Gainsford, Matt Gianforte, Mike Hanson, Simeon Kim and Meeyoun Park.
  • July 12: Festival Orchestra concert featuring soprano Heidi Grant Murphy, with Effron on the podium. Musicians for this year's Festival Orchestra include Jacobs School faculty members and students, as well as guests from symphony orchestras in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Rochester and St. Louis.
  • July 16: The Steve Houghton Trio, featuring Houghton on drums, Jeremy Allen on bass and Anders Astrand on percussion.
  • July 17: The Pacifica Quartet, the school's quartet-in-residence, joined by pianist Ilya Friedberg and violist Atar Arad.
  • July 19: Opera workshop, directed by Carol Vaness.
  • July 23: DiOrio will conduct the Festival Orchestra and Festival Chorus in Mozart's Mass in C Minor.
